People who choose to live in Queenstown often make a conscious decision to do so because they are passionate about what the resort offers and in return look for ways to give back and provide a lasting
legacy for the community.
This is according to local couple Joan Kiernan and Monica Mulholland who are leaving gifts in their wills to the Wakatipu Community Foundation (WCF).
September is being promoted by the WCF as Wills Month and Joan says local people are encouraged to consider making legacy gifts to the Foundation to help ensure the future of Queenstown.
“Leaving a legacy provides an important avenue of funding for WCF which has created an infrastructure making it straightforward for the average person to give. Traditionally those who want to leave to a charity have opted to set up trusts in their wills but that can actually be a
complicated process.”
“What the WCF has done is provide an easy way for people to donate by bequeathing money in their wills. It is a simple but quite brilliant concept. The legacy can be any amount, it doesn’t matter how much a person gives and all it takes is a visit to a lawyer to have the gift incorporated in
their will.”
Joan and Monica love the quality of life Queenstown offers them. “By encouraging people to give in this way we are by no means suggesting they cut their families out of their wills,” says Joan.
“But we do feel strongly that by leaving a legacy to the WCF people can inspire the next generation to also become more philanthropically aware.”
